Workshop Australian Museum, Sydney August 17-21, 1998
TENTATIVE PROGRAMME

Workshop is divided into two parts to assist those who cannot get away for too long during term time.

Monday and Tuesday are planned as technical lab days for sharing information and demonstration of techniques. Microscopes (with video) etc. and our reference material on slides and CD will be available for personal or group use A room with a slide projector and overhead will also be available. Participants are encouraged to bring samples of material they are working on for demonstrations, discussions, etc. Notification of particular equipment needs (e.g. chemical, mounting materials, etc.) are needed well in advance! Some topics are suggested, but there is plenty of room for others. Volunteers who would like to demonstrate their material or a specific technique, please come forth and let yourself be known!!!

Wednesday-Friday are scheduled for presentation of current research, discussions about issues, and planning session for future collaborative research.

The schedule given below is very preliminary. Please send your suggestions and/or volunteer to give presentations etc.

Monday, August 17

9-11 Assemble, tea/coffee, get acquainted, tours of Australian museum labs, etc.
11-1 Preparation, storage, etc. of reference material. Show and tell sessions.
2-5 Demonstration of image capture and digital image analysis of starch grains by the Australian Museum team. There should be time for hands-on trialling of the system by those interested.

(A good afternoon/evening for a harbour cruise for overseas visitors)

Tuesday, August 18

9 Assemble, etc.
10-5 (break for lunch) Demonstration of methods for extracting starch from soils. Michael Therin will discuss and demonstrate his current protocol. Show and tell sessions can also take place concurrently.

Wednesday, August 19

9-10 Assemble, tea/coffee, tours of Australian museum labs.
10-1 Individual presentations (15 minutes maximum). Who am I What starch research am I doing Poster presentations of research. Show and tell sessions. Tour and drinks at the University of Sydney residue laboratory.
2-5 Poster presentations of research. Show and tell sessions.
6 Tour and drinks at the University of Sydney residue laboratory.

Thursday, August 20

9-11 Establish key issues in starch research. What needs to be done Establish topics for working parties.
11-5 Working parties meet to come up with concrete proposals for future research.
6 on Drinks and Conference Dinner at a suitable venue

Friday, August 21

9-11 Working parties finish preparation of reports.
11-1 Brief reports from working parties.
2-5 Discussion of individual working party proposals for future research, grant proposals, etc.
